Shedd Aquarium's Marine and Island Ecology course introduces general ecological concepts and conservation management topics pertaining to marine and island ecosystems. The course will build on resources within Shedd Aquarium -including its collection and expert staff -along with guest speakers working in the field of marine conservation. Research methods are introduced and applied during a nine-day field research excursion to the Florida Keys aboard Shedd's research vessel the Coral Reef II. We will spend time snorkeling and observing first-hand the material covered in the classroom. Fish invertebrate and plant ecology will be covered with an emphasis on identification of key species. Students will participate in data collection for a variety of Shedd's ongoing research projects including coral shark and conch. An additional laboratory fee of $1700 is due to Shedd Aquarium upon acceptance. Travel is not included in the cost. Students should contact their department chair for details and to apply. Permission of the Department Chair required.
